Microsoft Corp. has announced the completion of its acquisition of Nokia Devices and Services business. The completion of the acquisition marks an important step in bringing these two organisations together as one team, a process that is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete.

Stephen Elop, former Nokia President and CEO, will serve as executive vice president of Microsoft’s Devices Group, reporting to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Elop will lead an expanded team made up of Xbox, Xbox Live, Microsoft Studios, Microsoft Hardware, Surface and Nokia Devices and Services.

Sammy’s revving up and poised to have yet another blockbuster year, especially now that its latest flagship is making the rounds. Looking at the field, Windows Phones in general have been in short supply. Despite that, the Nokia Lumia 1520 continues to be the shining force for the platform – giving its rivals something to worry about. In this next comparison, we’re going to dive in and figure out exactly how the Nokia Lumia 1520 can contend aga
inst the Samsung Galaxy S5.

There’s little doubt who has the superior design just by looking at these two phones. Even though Sammy has tried to sprinkle a dash of sophistication to the Galaxy S5’s design, it still can’t match the stylish and more solidly constructed design of the Lumia 1520. Sure, they’re both donning polycarbonate plastic with their housings, but the Lumia 1520’s chassis has more of a stylish edge capable of attracting attention with its tapered design, unibody construction, and colorful options.

Whereas the Lumia 1520 takes the checkered flag for its beautiful looks, Sammy’s flagship captures the race with its more comfortable feel – thanks in part to its rounded edges, smaller footprint, and lighter weight. Furthermore, we have to point out that the Galaxy S5’s IP67 certification makes it water resistant, so that’s an extra perk not available with the Lumia 1520.

Of course, there are many common ports and buttons shared by these two beasts, but the Galaxy S5 is outfitted with a few more to extend its worth. Specifically, they include a microUSB 3.0 port for faster charging/data connectivity, an IR blaster that transform the phone into a universal remote, a finger print reader for added security, and a heart rate sensor to measure our pulse.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 features a 5.1-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, while the Nokia Lumia 1520 flaunts a larger 6-inch 1080p IPS LCD display. On paper, the Galaxy S5 produces the higher pixel density figure, 432 ppi versus 369 ppi, but it doesn’t make for a substantial difference when we’re looking at the two from a normal viewing distance. Quite frankly, they’re sharp and detailed enough.

In the past, AMOLED panels couldn’t match the brightness output produced by LCD based displays, causing them to be almost unusable outdoors with the sun present. To our own amazement, the Galaxy S5’s AMOLED panel produces a brightness output of 442 nits, edging out the Lumia 1520’s 420 nits mark – permitting the Galaxy S5’s display to be viewable outdoors like its rival. Vastly showing improvement, the AMOLED panel of Sammy’s product also delivers the better viewing angles as well, so it maintains its clarity more. And finally, there’s just something about the iridescent glow of the AMOLED display that catches our attention more.

Also worth mentioning, the Galaxy S5’s display is able to track our finger as it’s hovering over the display – a useful thing that works in conjunction with its various Air View functions. Overall, we’re going to have to stick with Sammy on this one for having the better displa

Skinput is collaboration between Chris Harrison at Carnegie Mellon University and Dan Morris and Desney Tan at Microsoft's research lab. The researchers have shown that Skin-put can allow users to simply tap their skin in order to control audio devices, play games, make phone calls, and navigate hierarchical browsing systems.
In Skinput, a keyboard, menu, or other graphics are beamed onto a user's palm and forearm from a pico projector embedded in an armband. An acoustic detector in the armband then determines which part of the display is activated by the user's touch.

Nokia Lumia 2014 through 2015 roadmap leaks with details on new Windows Phone smartphones

A new report claims to reveal many of Nokia's upcoming Lumia smartphones and when they'll hit U.S. carriers. The roadmap gives details on handsets throughout the rest of this year and into 2015.

Microsoft acquired Nokia because the smartphone maker is the top manufacturer of Windows Phones and in order to further its growth, Microsoft wanted to be in control of both hardware and software, something that has worked out extremely well for Apple in both its iOS and Mac offerings.

We've already reported on some of the big changes and cool new features coming to Windows Phone 8.1, we even showed how to install the OS on current Windows Phone 8.1 in case one would want to take it for an early spin. Nokia's Windows Phone 8.1 update schedule recently leaked and now its roadmap of smartphones set to be released through the rest of 2014 and into 2015 has also just leaked.

The always-reliable tipster evleaks posted a "Nokia 2014 and Beyond" article revealing some of Microsoft's and Nokia's smartphone plans. The Nokia Lumia 635 will reportedly launch on T-Mobile, AT&T and Cricket Wireless at some point this month or sometime in July. The Lumia 635 will also make its way to Sprint later this year with updated firmware.

The Nokia Lumia 530, which is reportedly codenamed "Rock," will take over the Lumia 520's position as Nokia's entry-level smartphone. The handset will ship with Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box and will go head to head with low-end Android smartphones. The Lumia 530 is expected to launch on T-Mobile in mid-summer, followed by Cricket Wireless in the fourth quarter.

Microsoft will be releasing an update to Windows Phone 8.1 and it's currently code named Windows Phone Blue GDRThe first smartphones to ship with the new OS will be a pair of mid-range handsets; AT&T will get "Tesla" and Verizon will get "Superman." The tipster claims that the next wave of flagship smartphones will ship just in time for the holidays, and the device is apparently code named "Clarence" and will see a simultaneous release on AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

In the spring of 2015, AT&T will reportedly launch two new Lumia smartphones and they're going by the codenames "Makepeace" and "Dempsey." In late summer / early fall 2015, Nokia will release "Cityman," which is supposedly a new phablet and its new flagship smartphone is codenamed "Talkman." The tipster didn't provide any details on what these devices would feature in terms of specs.

As always, it's best to take reports of upcoming and unannounced smartphones with a huge grain of salt. It definitely sounds like Microsoft and Nokia are working overtime in their bid to make Windows Phone a dominant player like Android and iOS.
